UPDF kills Suspected Terrorists During Uganda Martyrs Celebrations

On the morning of June 3, 2025, as thousands gathered for Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations, a shocking explosion echoed near the Namugongo Martyrs Shrine in the Munyonyo suburb. Fortunately, thanks to a swift and targeted operation by the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF), two suspected terrorists a man and a woman were neutralized before they could cause harm.

This intelligence-led operation, carried out by a specialized counter-terrorism unit, was a proactive move to prevent a potential attack on one of the most significant sites for the annual Martyrs Day events. This commemoration honours the sacrifices of 45 Christian converts who faced execution between 1885 and 1887 for their faith. On X information trending on the female suspect and picture identifies her as the daughter of an individual involved in the 2021 attack on the Kampala Central Police Station.

As security forces heightened their presence across the city, they ensured the safety of the countless pilgrims making their way to the Namugongo shrines where celebrations continued undeterred. President Yoweri Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni joined worshippers at the Anglican shrine, fully engaged in the spirit of the day while in the Catholic side, there were prominent political members including Vice President Jessica Alupo.

While no group has yet claimed responsibility for the thwarted attack, authorities believe it was a calculated attempt to disrupt this significant religious gathering, and others on sociial media allege the attack was pioneered by the NUP members. The UPDF and police are now conducting thorough forensic investigations to piece together the details, with Col. Magezi urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.

As the community comes together to honour the martyrs, the commitment of security forces ensures that the spirit of unity and faith remains intact, even in the face of threats.
