The Last Frame of Saad Shots :Uganda’s celebrated photographer Dies in a motorcycle accident

In the vibrant heart of Kampala, where the city’s pulse thrummed with music, color, and stories, Saad Byakuleka — known to many as Saad Shots — was a visual poet. At just 31, his lens captured the soul of Uganda: lions prowling Queen Elizabeth National Park, electrifying performances by Eddy Kenzo, and Lake Victoria’s stormy silhouettes. His award-winning photography, including the East African Photography Award, graced tourism campaigns and celebrated Uganda’s natural beauty. Yet Saad’s other great love was his Kawasaki motorbike, his “babe.”

On Good Friday, April 18, 2025, Saad rode toward Lido Beach along the bustling Entebbe Road, the air thick with holiday excitement. His final Snapchat story showed him revving his engine, captioned simply, “Missed you babe.” But by 6:30 PM, near the Air Force junction at Bugonga, tragedy struck. Speeding, Saad collided head-on with a Bajaj Boxer motorcycle. The crash killed both him and the boda boda rider instantly, with Saad’s helmet-less head striking the tarmac hard.

News of the accident spread rapidly across Kampala. Social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) overflowed with grief. NBS Updates confirmed, “Renowned photographer Saad Shots has passed away.” The Uganda Tourism Board mourned their “gifted lensman,” while friends and fans recalled his infectious spirit. Media personality Mr. Henrie reflected on Saad’s early DJ days and his mentorship of young Ugandan creatives. His final viral image — a golden Entebbe sunset — paired hauntingly with one of his last tweets: “Can happen without you.” To some, it felt like foreshadowing; to others, it was simply Saad’s eternal search for light.

After a vigil in Seguku, Saad’s body was laid to rest in Kazo-Kitongore on April 20. His brother, Alex, confirmed the coroner’s report. Saad leaves behind a young son, with some friends suggesting he may have had a second child — a part of his story still unfolding.

Today, in Kazo, Saad Shots rests. Yet across Uganda, his photos endure — vibrant images of Namboole Stadium footballers, URA Towers at dusk, and countless everyday moments that reveal Uganda’s beating heart. His work remains a living testament to a man who always chased beauty, forever riding toward the next perfect shot.
