Nobert Mao has been reelected as the presidential general of the democratic party in Uganda for a fourth conservative term securing 969 votes at the party’s national delegates conference held in Mbarara on June 2 2025.
Norbert Mao is a prominent Ugandan politician and lawyer who has led DP since 2010. The Democratic party is one of the oldest political parties in Uganda that was founded in 1954 and has been a significant political party that has challenged the dominance of President Museveni’s government.
When Nobert Mao joined Museveni’s government and in 2022 was made the minister of justice and internal affairs. This move angered some party members of DP as others requested him to be removed from the position of President. Some members viewed him as a stabilizing force while others saw his alignment with NRM as a Portion degrading opposition
During the Mbarara conference, Mao faced competition from Dr.Luluma Bayiga who received 339 votes and Alitia Elia secured 52 votes.
Mao as the Party President together with Mbidde Mukasa as Vice President was sworn in during the Conference. His Victory reflects strong support among the DP delegates despite debates about his leadership style and the Party’s direction.
As Uganda draws near the 2026 general elections, DP’s relevance will depend on Nobert Mao’s ability to differentiate DP from NRM and other political parties like NUP as well as assure Party members they are still the strong Political Party 15 years ago.
