On 22nd May,2025 Kfm Presenter Yaddah Wanjiku won the second edition of Reporter Slam Africa 2025 In Lagos, Nigeria where she shared how her passion her journalism Career started ,the challenges and opportunities.
From her age of 8 when she got interest to reporting, mimicking adverts on radio, training with Media Challenge Initiative until she got her a job later with a Radio station.
In her presentation, she narrated her experience when she got into radio, the first company she worked with was hard because they sexualize women in that every time one goes to a work place, they would want to go to bed with you. During the presentation, she did not mention the name of the Radio she worked with but Yaddah worked with Galaxy Fm before she started working with KFM Radio.
Yaddah says the 8 months was really hard, she almost gave up on Journalism, because she was in an environment where people are not seen as human but they only see physical appearance and how they can make money of it.
The live show competition included five journalists from the Sub-Saharan Africa who were challenged to present their stories in a unique and creative way and if ones story won public attention, they would be named Slammer Of 2025.The Slammers were allowed to use presentation of multi-media elements like Photos, videos, audio to tell their story.
The Slammers were Yaddah Wanjiku Nduati(Uganda),Thomas Mukhwana(Kenya),Kyaugelo Masweneng(South Africa),Margaret Osazuwa(Nigeria), and Seth Joseph Bokpe(Ghana) and each slammer was given 10minutes on stage to capture the audience with their unique style of story telling and creativity.
Reporter Slam Africa is a live journalism show where reporters compete to tell the most compelling stories based on their own research. The organizers of this Slam is Konrad Adenauer Shiftung and this format originated from Berlin, Germany in 2016 and its expanding globally to great deeper connection between the journalists and the audience. Its not about, entertainment, Competition but story telling of the journalists journey in Journalism.
Yaddah Wanjiku apart from winning the trophy, she gets an opportunity to participate in Global events such as Reporter Slam In Germany, Networking and other prizes not mentioned.
Her Presentation shows that the Media In Uganda Still has a lot Of Sexual harassments Cases but it’s silent in the Journalism Industry. What Is Media when the Watch Dog in the Journalism Industry is the Prey?. What is Journalism when your work place suffocates you and What is Journalism without Passion But Greedy People?
