Dr. Kulthum Nabunya Muzaata, a prominent Ugandan Islamic scholar, educator, and community leader, announced the end of her two-year marriage to Acram Gumisiriza on June 15, 2025.
In a heartfelt letter released to the public, she cited incompatibility as the primary reason for the separation.
The couple married in 2022 after meeting in 2021, following the death of Dr. Kulthum’s first husband, the late Sheikh Nuhu Muzaata Batte, a controversial Muslim cleric and former spokesperson for the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC).
Their union, marked by a lavish wedding ceremony, initially drew public attention. Dr. Kulthum, who needed a companion after her husband’s passing, explained in her letter how the marriage began with hope but soon faltered as she noticed troubling “red flags” and the marriage wasn’t going as she expected.
Dr. Kulthum, the youngest widow of Sheikh Muzaata and a PhD holder in Educational Management from Makerere University, is known for her roles as Director of Anwar Baby and Primary School and Supervisor of Education Operations with Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA).
In contrast, Acram Gumisiriza, a Ugandan socialite based in South Africa, gained prominence through his high-profile lifestyle and legal troubles.
On October 10, 2023, he was detained by Ugandan police for allegedly threatening to kill a woman, Rema Mwiiza, with a panga after a dispute at Calendar House, Bar, and Lodge on Salaama Road.
The argument escalated when Acram suspected Mwiiza had recorded a video, leading to his charge for threatening violence. However, Dr. Kulthum’s letter did not cite this incident as a factor in her decision.
Reflecting on the marriage’s decline, Dr. Kulthum noted that her decision to divorce was not impulsive but the result of nearly years not months of contemplation.
“This is not blame; it’s about acknowledging that we are not good for each other in the way that a partnership should be,” she wrote in the letter.
She emphasized that despite her attempts to fix what was broken, the marriage ultimately failed.
Dr. Kulthum requested a peaceful divorce and has entrusted the process to her family and religious leaders, aligning with Islamic traditions.
She hopes that both she and Acram can find peace and hope on their separate paths moving forward.
