The Ugandan social media scene is on fire as celebrities and activists rally behind Eddie Mutwe, — the bodyguard of opposition leader Bobi Wine born name Robert kyagulanyi sentamu, who was allegedly abducted days ago under mysterious circumstances. The campaign for his release has gained momentum after a series of controversial tweets from Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s X (formerly Twitter) account appeared to mock the situation.

Edward Ssebufu also known as Eddie Mutwe, a well-known figure in Bobi Wine’s security detail, was reportedly seized by unidentified men in plain clothes. Friends and family say he vanished without a trace, sparking fears of yet another enforced disappearance—a pattern that has haunted government critics in Uganda for years.
Bobi Wine has been vocal about the incident, calling it an act of intimidation. —”They come for those close to me, thinking it will break me. But we will not be silenced,” he tweeted, alongside the hashtag #FreeEddieMutwe.
The campaign has drawn support from high-profile figures, including musicians, actors, and activists. Singer Cindy Sanyu posted, “If speaking out is a crime, then arrest us all. #FreeEddieMutwe.“— Comedian Anne Kansiime also weighed in, questioning, —”Since when did bodyguards become enemies of the state?”
But what really set the internet ablaze were tweets from Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s verified X account. The First Son, known for his provocative online presence, posted cryptic messages seemingly intended to provoke Bobi Wine and his team. One tweet read, —”Some people’s bodyguards think they are untouchable. Life can be funny.”
The posts were later deleted, but not before screenshots went viral, with many accusing Gen. Muhoozi of gloating over Eddie Mutwe’s disappearance. Government supporters, however, argue that the tweets were taken out of context.
As pressure mounts, authorities remain silent on Eddie Mutwe’s whereabouts. Human rights organizations have condemned the alleged abduction, with Amnesty International calling for an immediate investigation. Meanwhile, protests—both online and on the streets—are growing louder.
Will Eddie Mutwe be released, or will this become another unresolved case in Uganda’s tense political landscape? One thing is clear —the public isn’t backing down.
